Indonesia
Been there recently?
With over 17,000 islands, Indonesia has much to offer, and markets itself as the Ultimate in Diversity. With amazing natural beauty, delicious food, and some legendary islands, Indonesia is considered Asia’s sleeping giant.
Indonesia’s cities are in a constant state of urban evolution, where dense populations, technology and construction live in hectic symbiosis. But most of the archipelago’s territory is rural with charming villages, quaint temples and its friendly, unassuming inhabitants.
The main islands of note are Bali, Sumatra, Java, and Sulawesi plus the southern half of Borneo.
Bali will be the first island to come to mind. It is small but it has so much to offer the visitor with its many excellent beaches, rice terraces, enchanting temples and quaint villages. One should visit the interior of the island, be it Kintamani, the active, smoking volcano or Ubud, the resort perched on mountain slopes with its attractive artisan shops and serene setting
Another beach resort is Lombok on the island of Sumatra with its lush green landscapes, rice paddies and beautiful beaches.
For archaeology enthusiasts, Java offers the opportunity to visit Borobudur, Indonesia’s answer to Angkor Wat with its 1200 year old Buddhist relics and Prambanan, with its 9th Century Hindu temple complex.
Jakarta, the capital is well worth a visit. Although superficially, a sprawling, smoggy city, it can surprise you with its interesting districts such as the Old Quarter and its excellent National Museum.
The legendary Komodo Dragons on the island of Komodo are the world’s largest lizards often growing to 3 metres/10 feet in length. See them in their natural habitat up close and personal.
